Imagine kid you watching your favorite kids’ network. It goes to commercial. Every single time it cuts to commercial this whole thing plays in its entirety. You’ve seen it so much you know every word, every piece of music, all the words and the exact entonation in which they say it
That’s hell. Having the Shirley temple little darling dvd collection commercial permanently ingrained in your brain.
it has been many years since i have seen this commercial, and i can recite it word for word. op, what have you done
Sadly not many people realize this wonderful little lady was abused in her childhood by the people that were supposed to have her best interests in mind.
So, um…why doesn’t our society talk about our crimes against the Native Americans like we do our crimes against the Africans? Why are we so much more concerned about the fact that we took slaves than the fact that we took over another people’s nation and then nearly extinguished them? Hell, we have a beloved holiday that celebrates the near genocide of the Native Americans (never mind, a holiday that celebrates gluttony and animal cruelty…but that’s another topic), but we’d never dream of having a holiday that marked slavery. Aside from a double standard of sorts, the whole thing is horrifying when you think about it.
We learn all about slavery over and over again, and today are made to feel guilty about it as if we were slave owners ourselves. But what are we taught about the pioneers, the Natives, the invasion? “Oh, yeah, we made peace and had dinner together (right before we slaughtered them, whoops) and now we have a celebration where you stuff your face, watch sports, and camp out in front of Best Buy at one in the morning, hoping to catch a small deal on merchandise you don’t need.” Every country has a horrific past and social crimes. It’s always important that we study, learn, and try to rectify, but we can’t pick and choose what social offenses take precedence. Isn’t the fact that we pay more attention to the racism against Africans than to the racism against the Native Americans…well, pretty damn racist??
